Sun 3 / 7 / 2011 Uncle Rajs All Stars Home (YW) Won by 8 wickets. Oppo 140 Old Mo 141-2.

This fixture had been much anticipated by myself and it pitted us against the "Young Lions", a team consisting of some family and friends. Basically it was a match I did not want to lose!

The week leading up to the match did not bode well. The usual frantic ringing around for players prevailed but eventually, we were able to field a pretty decent team with the added bonus of Christian aka "Stan" from The Sportsman helping us out and the oppo gratiously giving us one of their players.

I deviously lost the toss and the oppo decided to bat first. I think my subliminal messaging to the oppo's captain convincing them that we had a "weak" batting side was a factor ( though with Tom, Stan, Tucker, Harris et al i knew differently!); however, I think it must have been because of the well oiled Fitmen strategy of having only half the side with 5 minutes to start of play leading them into a false sense of security!

Our bowling was decent at the beginning backed up with some tight fielding within the "circle" exemplified by Tom at point and Stan at Gully. The oppo had reversed their batting order and we duly managed to pick up a couple of early wickets. I realised their big hitters would soon be coming in so it was decided to introduce spin at both ends. Richard had initially started and then was complemented by Ian "snowball" Nutt. Indeed this proved the difference and who better to take pace off the ball than Nutter? The oppo had no answer to his wiles and succumbed to reckless charging down to the wicket. They clearly had no answer to the loop and dip that Ian was getting and he finished with a well deserved 4 wickets, including that of a Notts county player (batting at 10)! Ben bowled an excellent second spell and picked up 3 and the other bowlers each got a wicket. So overall it was an excellent effort to keep the oppo down to a below-par 140.

We got off to a solid start but the highlight was the 2nd wicket partnership between Tom and Stan. Indeed the innings was characterised by some excellent straight batting by Tom, punctuated by some lovely shots, and the more aggressive Stan who murdered the bad ball. Effectively the match was decided by this partnership. Stan fell just before reaching his fifty but by then the game had inexorably veered towards a resounding victory. The icing on the cake was provided by Jaz, sunny's brother. After he had seen (or not seen) 3 balls whiz past his off stump, he thought enough was enough and scored 4-6-4 off their fastest bowler!. Give some tips to Sunny on how to bat!

It was fitting that Tom hit the winning runs and also brought up a well deserved fifty along with it. He had anchored the innings really well and was a contender for man of the match. As it is, we'll just say the whole team played really well and we earned a great win!

The day itself was a success; the weather was beautiful and there was a crowd watching us, kids playing around enjoying themselves and some friendly rivalry on the benches. Of course it was topped off by securing bragging rights!
